Our Program Our child-centered music curriculum is structured around the Orff-Schulwerk philosophy of music education. The elements of Creativity, Innovation, Excellence, Passion, Artistry, and Performance drive the instruction while readily yielding to student inquiry. The music program is based on the national standards set forth by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) in 2014.
The child is always a participant in making music, not a spectator. Lower Years students learn to play the guitar, recorder, and percussion instruments in addition to singing. Music Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum through the study of arranging and composition. The Music Department uses iPads and apps such as Soundtrap, Garageband, and iMovie to explore creativity through music media.
Middle Years students can choose to study Rock Band, Beginning Guitar, or join the Beginning Band or Advanced Band.
Every 5th grader learns a band instrument as part of the music curriculum. All bands meet during the regular school day and learn how to perform an instrument in an ensemble setting. The Music Department has one full-time certified music teacher. Guest clinicians, artists, and conductors provide supplemental instruction throughout the school year.
